TRAINING CENTERS

The Family Medicine residency program has residents rotate through many local facilities.

UC Irvine Family Health Center, Santa Ana »

UCI Family Health Center, Santa Ana

The primary practice center for our residency program is the UCI Family Health Center (FHC) in Santa Ana. It is the largest federally qualified health center (FQHC) in the county, and serves as a model for the collaboration between the community and UCI Health.

This 52,000-square-foot facility was inaugurated in January 1996. Located in close proximity to UCI Medical Center, this important facility features a unique partnership that combines service to an underserved population in a setting that complements our teaching activities. Our clinic patients reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity of Orange County. They provide our residents with a challenging mix of medical, social and economic problems.

Our center is located in an area designated as a medically underserved area. Because of this, the center is recognized as a National Health Service Corps site. Our activities at the center continue a long-standing tradition for which we have acquired an outstanding local and national reputation for our work with the medically underserved.

The center is fully staffed with nursing and office personnel. There are 27 exam rooms, three fully equipped urgent care rooms and three procedure rooms equipped to train residents in common office procedures.

Additional resources within the FHC include conference rooms, behavioral science consulting rooms and a residents’ room--a large space for the residents to write up their cases and discuss them with faculty. One exam room is fully equipped for videotaping patient encounters. Multiple personal computers are available to the residents at FHC and offer full Internet access with free subscriptions to resources such as MDConsult, Up to Date, the Cochrane Database plus and hundreds of full-text online journals.

Weekly conferences are an important part of the curriculum and are held at the Family Health Center and other sites. These teaching sessions include behavioral science conferences, didactic lectures, case presentations, practice management and managed care lectures, as well as resident and staff meetings.

Patient Demographics

Our Family Health Center serves many Latino/Hispanic patients, many of whom speak Spanish as their first language. Most of our clinical staff are bilingual in English and Spanish.
