Residency Program

Mission Statement:

The Department of Family Medicine Residency Program strives to train excellent clinicians who provide the best patient-centered compassionate medical care to our most vulnerable and under-served communities.

We integrate technology and innovation in a unique community-academic hybrid educational setting that allows us to combine intensive clinical training while promoting community engagement, patient advocacy and the practice of socially responsible and culturally appropriate care.

Welcome to Residency class of 2020:

We are excited to welcome our new class of residents who will be joining us in Summer, 2017.

Director's Welcome:

Thank you for visiting our Family Medicine Residency home page. Here at UC Irvine, we are privileged to care for some of the most vulnerable patients in Orange County. It is for them that we seek the best residency candidates who we can cultivate into the best physicians for our patients.

We offer a balance between academics and community medicine. Our residents mostly practice out of our community-based, federally qualified health centers (FQHC) in Santa Ana and Anaheim, but they also participate in the rigorous learning environment of the UC Irvine Medical Center.

We develop well rounded physicians through innovative programs such as:

  • PRIME-LC track, dedicated to training physicians to serve the Latino community. It is the first program of its kind in the country.
  • Integrative Medicine residency track, a specialized curriculum for residents that allows the provision of alternative/integrative medicine for the patients of the Family Health Centers.
  • Geriatrics fellowship, a one-year comprehensive, advanced training program designed to prepare physicians to care for older adults.
  • Sports medicine, with a NCAA Division I program and USA Olympic Water Polo team.
  • School Outreach Program, allowing our residents to provide clinical care, health education and mentoring in local K-12 schools.
  • UC Irvine Outreach Clinics, a student-run free clinic and community medicine rotation.
  • International health electives, offering a strong history of worldwide service.

We want to help you achieve your full potential, not only as a clinician, but also as a physician for some of the most disenfranchised patient populations of all ages. Our home base is Santa Ana, where the average per capita income is $16,000 per year and 83 percent of the community speaks primarily Spanish in the home.

As you may know, communities such as Santa Ana lack equal access to healthcare and have a higher burden of disease. We prepare you to take care of some of our community’s sickest patients while delving into the psychosocial issues that also influence their health and wellness. Our highly trained and experienced faculty offer a supportive environment that fosters learning and professional development with the overarching mission of caring for the underserved.
